The contract is the point.

An honest essay on willpower, friction, and the version of yourself who shows up at 2am.

Willpower is the wrong unit. It assumes a single, unified you, present at the moment of decision, in full possession of the information and motivation that lead to a good outcome. That person rarely shows up at 2am.

What usually shows up is a half-distracted, half-tired, mildly anxious version of you. The version that opens a tab on autopilot. The version that says just one moreas if that’s a sentence anyone has ever finished and been glad about.

What we built

Commitmentor is a commitment device, in the strict sense of the term Thomas Schelling used in 1960: a deliberate constraint that removes some options from your future self because your present self has decided they are not options you want.

We didn’t invent the idea. We just made one that fits in a browser tab.

What we don’t believe

We don’t believe in shame. We don’t believe in gamification dressed up as therapy. We don’t believe productivity is virtue. We don’t believe a 30-second inspirational quote is going to outweigh ten years of muscle memory in the moment that matters.

We do believe that a sentence you wrote, in your own words, on a day you were thinking clearly — placed in front of the future you who isn’t — is a more honest negotiation than any of those things.

What the contract is

It’s a small, low-drama moment of friction. A few seconds. Your own words. A real cost if you continue. A real reset if you slip. A real log if you want to see what you actually did.

That’s it. There’s no streak achievement. There’s no badge. There’s no notification reminding you to be virtuous. There’s a screen, when you reach for the thing, that says: you wrote this.

What we ask of you

Write the sentence honestly. Set a cost you would actually feel. Don’t fake the contract. Don’t soften it the moment it stops being convenient.

And: forgive yourself when you slip. The contract is there to make decisions conscious, not perfect. A slip with an honest log is still better than ten slips in the dark.

What we promise

We will never train on your reasons. We will never sell your data. We will never push you a notification that pretends to be an insight but is really a re-engagement. We will never hide or lengthen the “continue anyway” path; the escape is the brand.

When you continue past an intercept, the charge you set for yourself comes to us. We use it to build the next layer of behavior-change tools — for you and for everyone else doing this work. We don’t pretend the incentive is neutral; we build the rest of the product so you succeed anyway.

We will keep this software small. We will keep the surface area close to the original idea. We will publish a changelog you can read.
